Climate Change and the Environment
Climate change is the defining issue of our time and a concern for everyone. Shifting weather patterns and adverse weather conditions that threaten food production, to rising sea levels that increase the risk of catastrophic flooding, the impacts of climate change is a global problem. It’s increasingly clear this is a today issue and not a problem for future generations. Climate change is already affecting our world and maybe more than some of us realise.
Greenhouse gases occur naturally and are essential to the survival of humans and millions of other living things, by keeping some of the sun’s warmth from reflecting back into space and making Earth liveable. But after more than a century and a half of industrialisation, deforestation, and large scale agriculture, quantities of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have risen to record levels not seen in three million years. As populations, economies and standards of living grow, so does the cumulative level of greenhouse gas emissions.
With the construction industry being one of the largest contributors producing approximately 11.4 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions produced in 2020, reducing our carbon footprint is fundamentally necessary to create a world where people and nature thrive.

As such, we present our Sustainability Strategy, outlining our eight key themes and targets for 2031, as well as our comprehensive approach to minimising our environmental impact.

Being a place-maker of new homes and community spaces, we are keen to make sure that the areas we develop are better than we found them. This includes the Biodiversity and green spaces within developments.
Businesses like ours play a front line role, directly engaging and enthusing the public about biodiversity. We will work with them to engage more people and empower them to make a difference. Establishing new green areas and empowering communities to protect local environments that are important to them.

Introducing the Chartway Bee
Westerhill Homes and Chartway Partnerships Group is excited (you could say buzzing) to announce our new partnership with Bee Conservation. As part of our commitment to biodiversity and sustainability, Summer 2023, we installed the first Chartway bee hive onsite at our Head Office in Kent.
Introducing the Chartway Bee – our beloved new emblem which will symbolise our dedication to preserving and nurturing ecosystems. You’ll be seeing the Chartway Bee across our business and communications, connecting Chartway initiatives to the remarkable world of pollinators. We have future plans to extend our beekeeping efforts to our development housing sites, with a sweet vision of producing our very own Chartway Honey in the future!
To celebrate the occasion, members of the Chartway team embraced their inner beekeepers and volunteered for the day at the hive installation. A big thanks to Alex Markwick and Julie Brown who fully dove into the experience, immersing themselves in the importance of pollinators and their vital role in our ecosystem. HIVE 5 to #TeamChartway

Our Road Map to Net Zero Carbon Homes
The 2031 target for our homes
We are committed to measuring and reporting our carbon footprint in line with our Net Zero targets. We continuously improve our procedures and strive to decarbonise our activities. This includes identifying development opportunities, fostering innovation, and driving continual business improvement.
We are working towards achieving Net Zero / Low Energy Housing, using the NDSS standard as a baseline. By future-proofing our designs, we ensure that our homes are versatile, sustainable and aligned with our clients’ objectives.
From 2023, we will have the capability to deliver Net Zero / Low Energy Homes (EPC A) and by 2031, all our homes will be Net Zero Carbon.
