We traditionally take down our Christmas decorations on ‘twelfth night’, which this year is tomorrow, Thursday 5th January.
If you have had a real tree in your home, there are a number of ways to recycle it. If you have had a rooted tree, then it can be either re-potted into a tub or planted directly into the ground and, with care you should be able to bring it in again next year.
There are local charities which offer collection or drop-off points, check online to see who is offering this service, usually there is a set donation to make. Local councils may also offer this service, visit your local authority web site to find out what is being providing to local households.
You could also chip your tree if it doesn’t have roots and stack it at the back of a border or add it to your compost heap to rot down for later use. There are lots of tips on the Gardens World web site, click here https://www.gardenersworld.com/plants/six-ways-to-recycle-your-christmas-tree/
Christmas cards can be recycled, but make sure to remove glitter and foil, add them to your paper bin for collection or take them to local charity shops, household recycling centres and collection banks at supermarkets.
You could be creative by upcycling cards, making your own gift tags by cutting out areas of cards and adding a ribbon or coloured string, or re-purposing them by making a new card, ready to add to your store for next year. There are additional creative ideas on the Country Living web site, click here https://www.countryliving.com/uk/create/craft/a3005/recycling-christmas-cards/
Make the de-decorating just as much fun as the pre-Christmas decoration was, play some great music, think about the plans you have for 2023, get the children to tell you what the best parts of this Christmas have been, what food they have liked (or disliked!) or, plan some days out.
Happy New Year from all of us at Westerhill Homes.
